
A 6-1, 175-lb., explosive point guard with handles, court vision and a wicked jumper, Jonny Flynn is the ultimate floor general.
The son of Reverend William Flynn and Deirdre Flynn, Jonny came up in Niagara Falls, N.Y. His first love was baseball, but he committed to basketball at a young age, honing his game on the parks Niagara area. His game blossomed over time and he developed into one of the most touted prospects to ever come from Niagara Falls – he garnered McDonald’s All-American honors and the “Mr. Basketball Award” for New York after averaging 26.7 points, 6 assists, 3.5 steals, and 3.3 rebounds per game his senior year. His 1,735 career points merited a Player of the Year selection from the Buffalo News and a No. 22 ranking in the Class of 2007 according to Rivals.com.
Before heading off to Syracuse University, Flynn competed in the U-18 and U-19 teams for USA Basketball, where he contributed to winning gold and silver medals respectively. At Syracuse, where he majored in Communications and Rhetorical Studies, Flynn’s stardom on the court took off. During his freshman season he won Big East Co-Rookie of the Year and Big East Honorable Mention for his 15.7 points, 5.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals.
His sophomore season was even more impressive, as he posted totals of 17.4 points, 6.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 steals. Those numbers boosted his point totals above 1,000 to make him the 51st member of that elite club at ‘Cuse. His 180 assists also rank 5th in school history. Those exploits earned Flynn a nomination as of 17 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s best point guard.
A phenomenal run by Flynn and his 'Cuse teammates that saw them rampage deep into the Big East Tournament and earn a berth the NCAA Tournament sent Jonny's NBA Draft stock skyrocketing through the roof, putting him in a prime position to achieve his goal of becoming an NBA player. Heading into the Draft, it has been projected that Jonny could be selected as high as No. 6 - a projection that could climb even higher if he performs well in workouts leading up to Draft night.
